FEDERAL Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke has backed a second package to stimulate the US economy, despite its likely impact on the deficit, after warning that America faced a serious slowdown with "very significant consequences for the public".
Appearing before the House of Representatives Budget Committee, Dr Bernanke refused to use the word "recession" to describe the downturn, saying it was a technical term. But he did warn of a serious slowdown that would require ongoing policy intervention by the Congress and the new president.
